Dark circles aren't one thing — they fall into pigmented (melanin), vascular (vessels showing through thin skin), and structural (a shadow from hollowing), and each type asks for a different approach. Most of us treat them as a brightening problem: apply something and wait for the color to lift. For many, it never quite does. People say you look tired, but rarely name what's actually darkening the skin. If brightening never seems to help, yours may be vascular or structural rather than pigmented. Under-eye skin is the thinnest on the face, so before reaching for strong brighteners or acids (vitamin C, AHA, BHA), it helps to know which type you have.

What are the different types of dark circles?
The darkness has different roots. Pigmented circles come from extra melanin in the under-eye skin, reading brown or dusky. Vascular circles appear where thin skin lets the vessels and pooled blood beneath show through, reading bluish or purple. Which type of dark circle do you have?
A quick check helps. Gently stretch the skin under your eye. If the color stays, it leans pigmented; if it fades, it may be vascular. If the darkness shifts a lot when you move the light from above to below, or fades when you lie down, it's the shadow of a structural circle. It isn't a diagnosis, but it points you the right way.
Why doesn't brightening alone fix them?
If it's pigmented, sun protection and a gentle brightener help. But brighten a vascular circle and the reason the vessels show stays the same, so the color barely shifts. Structural circles are a shadow from lost volume, so topicals only go so far — it's a procedural area (Roh & Chung, 2009). Repeat brighteners without knowing the type, and you mostly irritate thin skin instead of fading anything.
Why go gentler on the eye area?
Under-eye skin is the thinnest on the face and reacts easily. Push strong brighteners or acids (vitamin C, AHA, BHA) hard, and irritation and pigmentation can arrive before any fading. Should you erase the color, or read the type first?
