Why do wrinkles show up around the eyes first?

Eyelid skin is the thinnest on the face, carries almost no surface lipid, and folds about 17 times a minute. Why the eye area lines before anywhere else.

Wrinkles show around the eyes first because eyelid skin is the thinnest on the face — a median of 573 µm on the upper lid against 1,907 µm at the tip of the nose — it carries almost no surface lipid, and it folds roughly seventeen times a minute at rest. The part most people have slightly wrong is the dryness: the eye area is lipid-poor, but its water content is not lower than the cheek's.

The lines around your eyes usually arrive before the ones anywhere else, and they arrive whether or not you have been careless. Three things about that patch of skin explain most of it.

How much thinner is eyelid skin, really?

Thinner than any other measured site on the face. In 45 women scanned across 23 facial regions with 75 MHz ultrasound, the upper eyelid was the thinnest of all at a median 573.50 µm, while the apex of the nose reached 1,907 µm (Korzekwa et al., 2025). An earlier cadaver study reached the same ranking and used the eyelid as its baseline: set at 1.0, the nasal tip measured 3.30 times thicker and the brow 2.8 times (Ha et al., 2005).

Same expression, same sun, same routine — the eye area simply has less material absorbing it. That's an anatomy fact rather than a failure of care.

Is the eye area actually drier than the rest of the face?

This is where the usual story bends. Measured on 22 healthy adults, the eyelid did show high water loss and, in the authors' words, extremely low amounts of surface lipid compared with neighbouring skin. But hydration itself came out as high as adjacent facial skin, because the eyelid's superficial corneocytes are significantly larger and hold water well (Pratchyapruit et al., 2007).

So the accurate description isn't "the eye area is dry" — it's "the eye area is thin and has almost no oil on it." That distinction changes what you reach for: an occlusive layer to replace missing lipid is a different job from pouring in humectant. What water loss means more broadly is in what TEWL is.

How often does the eye area actually fold?

Constantly, and more than you'd guess. Videotaped in 150 healthy volunteers, spontaneous blinking ran at 17 blinks per minute at rest, rose to 26 during conversation, and dropped to 4.5 while reading (Bentivoglio et al., 1997). Hold the resting rate across a waking day and the arithmetic lands near sixteen thousand folds, though the real number swings widely with what you spend the day doing.

No other area of facial skin is mechanically creased on that schedule, and the skin doing the creasing is the thinnest you have.

When does folding start leaving a mark?

When the dermis underneath stops springing back. In 157 biopsies from 46 people, the dermis directly under a wrinkle showed interrupted elastin and pronounced collagen atrophy — the fold had become structure rather than movement (Contet-Audonneau et al., 1999).

Sun accelerates that. Collagen in the dermis thins with age alone, but in skin that has taken years of sun, malformed elastin accumulates where the collagen used to be (El-Domyati et al., 2002). That work measured facial skin as a whole. No study has isolated the eye area, so sun is best described as something that brings the change forward, not a proven cause of crow's feet.

What this changes about how you treat it

Mostly it lowers the temperature. If the eye area lines early because it is thin, lipid-poor and folded all day, then the useful moves are the unexciting ones: don't drag at it, replace the oil it doesn't make, and keep daytime UV off it for the decades it has left. Being early is not the same as being damaged, and a patch of skin this thin does better with less handling, not more product.

  • Pat rather than drag when you apply anything near the eye — it is the thinnest skin on your face by measurement, not by reputation.
  • Since the eye area is low in surface lipid, look for a moisturizer that supplies lipids, not just humectants.
  • Wear sunscreen up to the orbital bone, and add sunglasses on bright days — squinting adds folds on top of blinking.
  • If a product stings there but not on the cheek, that's the thickness difference talking; lower the strength before you drop the ingredient.

Can eye wrinkles be prevented entirely?
No. Thin skin, low lipid and constant blinking are structural. What is modifiable is sun exposure, friction and how dry you keep the area.
